10 Ideas for a Budget-Friendly Laundry Room Renovation

10 Ideas for a Budget-Friendly Laundry Room Renovation

Your laundry room is a room that may get overlooked when it comes to home renovations. However, all it takes is a weekend and some inspiration to make a big difference. Here are Notre Dame Castle’s ten budget-friendly laundry room renovation ideas that may encourage you to look at the space in a new light.

#1 - Stack to Flat

If your washer and dryer are currently on top of the other and you have enough space in the laundry room, consider installing the washer and dryer side by side instead. This change can increase storage as well as functionality. Install a countertop across the machines to create a new area for folding. Having the appliances side by side also opens up wall space above to create shelving or cupboards for storage of laundry detergent, dryer sheets, etc.

#2 - Add or Change the Colour

A coat of paint can change the look of a whole room! Because laundry rooms are usually small, take a chance with a bold colour that brightens the room. You may want to choose a colour that makes you feel joy; one that’s fresh and bright; or, for a more peaceful environment, a calming colour like green to freshen up the space. Or, step beyond your comfort zone and add contrast lines or a different colour behind the washer and dryer. An accent colour adds dimension and a “wow” factor to the space that may have been missing before. Take the time to assess the area and decide which wall or walls you want to paint. Now it’s time to look at paint chips!

#3 - Add a Floating Shelf

Adding a floating shelf to a laundry room is a great space-saving way to create a designated area for storage or a place for plants. If you don’t have a green thumb, an artificial plant adds a homey feel and a punch of colour. Most store-bought floating shelves come with installation explanations and hardware, making them easy to install.

Before purchasing a shelf, measure the area where you want to install it and ensure you have the space required. Placement is key. Don’t put it directly behind a door or too high on a wall to reach.

#4 - Introduce Storage Cubicles or Baskets

If you have shelving in the laundry room, add baskets to enhance the décor factor and increase storage. Baskets can hold extra towels or facecloths; or labelled with family members’ names.

If you decide to go with cubicle shelving, you can wallpaper the back wall of the shelving unit to add colour and glamour. Don’t shy away from themed wallpaper! It can be geared toward the children in the house, or choose something mature and chic to increase the room’s attractiveness.

#5 - Consider Flooring

New flooring may be an option if you are looking for a more challenging project in the laundry room. A new floor can make a dramatic change in the room. There are many options for flooring, and with prices at all budget levels, you can choose which flooring is best for your space.

Vinyl is affordable, easy to install, and available in many patterns and styles. Another popular option is tile – it’s water-resistant and durable. Retiling requires more time and skill to ensure the floor is level and tiles cut and placed properly using spacers and grout. There is also a waiting time before placing the washer and dryer back in the room. Installing a cushioned carpet is affordable and will protect your knees and feet while doing laundry or ironing.

#6 - Create a Backsplash

A backsplash adds a finishing touch to a space, and makes laundry room messes easy to clean. If you have leftover tile from another project, you can use it to add a backsplash behind the laundry room sink or appliances. If you don’t have tile, check out your local flooring store for discontinued tile, or apply easy-to-install peel ‘n stick tiles behind the sink. The tile you choose should match the paint or wallpaper in the rest of the laundry room.

#7 - Go for a Hardware Upgrade

It’s time to raise the bar on your laundry room cabinet hardware. This quick and easy upgrade has a significant impact in terms of style and functionality. Here’s where a little whimsy can go a long way. Installing a new pull is only a stop at your hardware store and a screwdriver away. Also, don’t overlook extra towel racks and hooks!

#8 - Get New Lights

See your laundry room in a different light by installing new fixtures such as pot or wall lights. Proper lighting goes a long way, especially if you don’t have natural lighting coming into the room. Assess your laundry room the next time you use it, and see where it could use light. Pot lights, standard ceiling-mounted lights, hanging ceiling lights, and under-cabinet or shelf lighting are just a few suggestions, so consider the type of lighting and bulbs you want to use carefully. Express your personality and add a fixture that makes you happy.

#9 - Display Art or Photography

Place a piece of art in the laundry room. Consider your home’s existing art and how it could continue to flow into the laundry room. You can always find standard black-and-white prints of old-fashioned wringer-washing machines, but choose something you love that speaks to you and will work with your room.

#10 - Change your Sink Faucets

With a wide variety of faucets available, there will be something within your budget. Faucets come in various styles and colours. When shopping, choose a faucet that works with the existing laundry room and gives you the benefits you’re looking for. Depending on what you use your laundry room sink for, you may wish to purchase a faucet with a more luxurious feel. A pull sprayer is beneficial when tackling stains and bathing pets. No-touch taps are great when you don’t want to touch the faucet. Research your options, then decide which faucet best meets your needs.

Even if you don't have a large budget for a laundry room upgrade, completing small renos and projects like the ones above will add to your home’s overall functionality and vibe.
